With only one week left until Christmas, it’s time to make plans for this year’s winter holiday. Here’s what I’m going to do between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
Spend quality time with my family
Spending time with my family is always a top priority during the Christmas Holidays. It’s the perfect moment to meet up and reflect on the past year.
As every year, my husband and I are planning to spend Christmas Eve with my family, move on to his family for Christmas day, and celebrate New Year’s Eve with my brothers and cousins.
In my twenties I couldn’t wait to leave the family celebrations in order to go dancing with my friends. These days, family time has become an important value that I’m really looking forward to.
Not thinking about my job
During the Christmas holidays, for once, I know for sure that there’s nothing going on at the office. Most colleagues are on vacation, projects stand still until January, and nobody expects me to do anything. Even if I decided to check e-mails, my inbox is probably going to be empty. This is going to feel like heaven – and I’m happy NOT to think about my job AT ALL.
Have a good glass of red wine with my husband
At the end of each year my husband and I select a night when we make ourselves comfortable on the couch with a good glass of wine. With Christmas songs playing in the background and a YouTube fireplace on TV, we ralk about the past year and make plans for the future.
Meeting my best friend for breakfast
Since my best friend has had her first child, our meetings have become rare. With my working hours and her obligations as a mother, it’s difficult to find a date that’s fine for both of us.
During the Christmas holidays, meeting up is much easier. We have already set a date for breakfast, and I can’t wait to catch up with our girl talk.
Sorting through my holiday pictures from 2017
I have made a habit of creating a photo book of each vacation. Although we share our pictures and travel stories with friends and family via google photos, it’s not the same.
With all the places I have visited this year, there’s still some catching up to do. The Christmas Holidays are the perfect occasion to bundle up my memories into beautiful books.
Research party games for New Year’s Eve
Celebrating New Year’s Eve with my family is something that I’m looking forward to all year. I just love the spirit of this night, and spending it with my loved ones makes it even more special to me.
Organizing the whole event is almost as much fun as the party itself. After Christmas, by the latest, I’m starting to browse the internet for party games and other stuff in order to make our New Year’s celebration entertaining.
Think of my goals for 2018
As the end of the year draws closer, I’m also planning to take my time two think about the coming months. While there are, of course, a lot of things I can’t influence, I still like the idea of setting positive goals for the next year. No matter what’s coming, it’s always up to myself how I’m going to handle it, right?
The beginning of a new year is a great opportunity to make things better. To be less judgemental, more understanding, a better friend, and a helpful daughter to my parents.
Even if I don’t always manage to stick to my goals, it’s important for my self-respect that I try to do so. And by writing it down I’m creating an incentive, as well as a reminder, to become the person I want to be.
Watch all 7 Harry Potter movies in a row
Actually I don’t even know why, but somehow Christmas always reminds me of Harry Potter.
It might be because Christmas is present in every school year Harry, Hermione and Ron spend at Hogwarts. Or maybe it is because, when the first Harry Potter book was published, my mom bought it for Christmas for us kids. I was twelve by the time, and I still remember it as if it had been only yesterday. During the following month or so, my mom gathered us around her in the living room each evening, reading Harry Potter’s first adventure out loud to us. My brothers, my sister and I loved the story from the very beginning. In the following years, I continued reading the other books on my own. Harry Potter accompanied me through my teens, as well as during my years at university.
Nowadays, in addition to the books, I also own a DVD box. Not having seen the movies for the last 2-3 years, I’m really looking forward to put myself back into Hogwarts this year.
Take a bath with candles while listening to my latest audio book
Winter holidays go hand in hand with relaxation and recreation. After an exhausting year at work, it’s important to spend quality time with me, myself and I.
One of my favourite ways to do so is creating a cosy atmosphere in my bathroom, draw a bath, and relax in the warm water while listening to an audio book.
Spend at least 1 hour outside each day – no matter the weather!
Especially during the winter months, I don’t get to spend much time outside in daylight. By the time I get up and drive to the office, it is usually still dark outside. And with the sun setting as early as 4 p.m. there’s no way for me to get some daylight after work.
That’s why I really appreciate spending time outside whenever I get the opportunity to do so. For this year’s winter holiday, my husband and I have set a goal to go for a walk outside every day – even if it’s raining or snowing. Apart from being good for our health, our daily walks are also a great opportunity to really talk to each other.
Two short holidays in European cities
Finally, my husband and I are also planning to travel a bit. With two weeks of paid leave over Christmas, spending time with the family, going for a walk outside and watching Harry Potter at night only brings us so far. There’s still plenty of time left – and that’s why we spontaneously booked two short holidays to European cities:
First we’re taking the train to Vienna between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. One week later, we’re going to spend two days in Dresden where we’re planning to do some sightseeing.
To sum it up:
I think we have created a pretty cool mix for this year’s holidays. All I have to do now is to complete my last week in the office, before slipping into holiday mode and enjoying the best time of the year with my loved ones.
